STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF MOST REVEREND FERNAND CHERI III, OFM
Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans
“My grace is enough for you, for in weakness, power reaches perfection.” - 2Cor 12:9
These powerful words serve as testimony to the faithful, dedicated, and inspirational life of our great shepherd and loyal Claver brother, Most Reverend Fernand Cheri III, OFM who transitioned from this life on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at approximately 7:30 am Central Time. An ordained priest for over 43 years, Bishop Cheri dedicated his life to advocating for the issues that directly impact our Church – particularly our youth, young adults, and Black Catholics across the country. Bishop Cheri was an active Claver, not only attending and participating fully in so many of our conferences and conventions, but regularly meeting with our Junior Knights, Junior Daughters, and collegiate members – always stressing the importance of them being both engaged participants and leaders in our church as well as a community strengthened by faith and a closer relationship with God. Today, the Bishop calls on us to continue his mission; to be drum majors of faith, love, and justice; to live and dedicate our lives to prayer and Catholic Action; and most importantly to be a unified Church that loves and cares for one another. Thank you, Most Reverend Fernand Cheri III, OFM. Rest well knowing that we are fully committed to carrying on your work and the work of our Holy Church.
